Assistive Technologies

“If it helps one student, it will likely help every student.” This quote has been a common theme in all of our courses. As we learn about different IEP’s and diagnoses we’ve found ways to make learning more accessible. What we’ve noticed is that all of these programs, apps, websites, and techniques will be helpful for ALL students. This list below are some of my favourites:

Google Speech-to-Text: This software transcribes in real time what someone is saying. This would be helpful for students with hearing impairments. It is also helpful to have a record of what was said. It is a super easy to use interface that can be implemented in a classroom. Zoom also has this tool. As a meeting is taking place it will transcribe what is being said and can be downloaded later. The YouTube video below discusses the accuracy of the software.

Apple iPad: As of 2021, the Apple Appstore has 2.2 MILLION apps. Many of them are designed to help learning. The iPad, and all apple products, have accessibility features. This YouTube video explains some of the features.
